The life course persistent and adolescent offenders

The youth who commit crimes are grouped into two namely: The life course persistent and adolescent offenders. The life course offenders are the ones who are likely to commit crimes early in their teens and continue after reaching the age of twenty while adolescent offenders only commit crimes in their teenage years (Boutwell, 2013). However, this behavior has been attributed to the prolonged adolescence being experienced these days which comes about due to the change in traditional turning points. The reason it is prolonging is due to the decline in high paying manufacturing jobs, an increase in the number of people earning post-secondary education and an increase in low serving positions (PMC, 2012). This article looks at whether the jailing of life course persistent and adolescent-limited offenders together will benefit the AL or turn him into an LCP.

The AL and LCP are two distinct groups of people. The AL is offenders who do not have a past history of antisocial behavior and are likely to desist from committing crime as they take up mature or adult roles. The reason they stop committing crimes is that the motivation to do it decreases as well as the availability of other alternatives more than delinquency. On the other hand, the LCP offenders start exhibiting antisocial behaviors at an early age which continue later on in their lives. Majority of these offenders are often exposed to criminogenic environments at an early age (Moffitt, 2002).

The jailing of Al offenders together with the LCP offenders may turn out to be harmful than beneficial. The reason is that the AL offenders need peer pressure to commit a crime while LCP offenders can do it alone hence they are likely to start coaching the young offenders. Due to jailing offenders are likely to form close ties as a human survival instinct to try to belong to a group which may eventually change their behavior to conform to that of the friends. Also, the conditions in jails are often hard and brutal thus may harden the AL offender in order to avoid being bullied but it may have consequences as they may exhibit the behavior even when out of prison (Ferreira, 2016).
