Religion has the role and the responsibility to unite people in society regardless of their social class. However, when put under in-depth scrutiny, one will realize that religion has played a significant role in separating the people by promoting inequality among the different social classes around us. Karl Max referred to religion as the “opium of the masses” because it acted as a drug which prevented the poor in the society from seeing the real state of their poverty. One of the ways by which religion promotes inequality is by encouraging Christians to obey and be loyal to their leaders. According to Karl, they are most likely to suffer under the oppressive regime in the attempts to follow their religion, which makes them lesser compared to their leaders.
Religions such as Hinduism have the members divided into dynasties. Members from these dynasties according to their wealth. The families who are known as the caste to the religion separate the wealthiest members of the faith- Brahmins from the rest. The lowest members of the religion are the Dalit’s, and they are considered as cursed and untouchable. This makes it hard for them to get justice and to lead a social life like that of the Brahmins. For this reason, religion promotes social inequality and social injustice among the members depending on the social class of the members.
