Mental health is the state of being in an excellent psychological condition or lacking mental illness. It is where the emotions and behaviors satisfy the necessary level of a normal human being. It may include the human’s capability to enjoy life and create balance efforts and activities to get back to normal. It entails the realization of their abilities, dealing with life stresses, working, and relationship with the community. Substance disorder is a disease that attacks the human brain and behavior and leads to an inability to control one’s urge to use drugs, both illegal and legal. It is characterized by physical, mental, and behavioral symptoms. It may cause strain to interpersonal life, hazardous use, and withdrawal.

In the book, no longer alone, all Maria, Isabel, and Rosa suffer some problems of substance abuse. Maria starts by engaging in a fight with Anah and gave Mrs. Smith a lousy haircut. Before she was a good hairdresser, but after doing substance abuse, she did her job poorly. It dramatically affects her interpersonal relationship, reputation, and career. The police had arrested Isabel for driving under the influence of pot and other drugs that led her to be aligned to court and fined. Rosa, she led her children Jorgito and Sofia, being hurt by the stove when they were playing with it leading to the outbreak of fire. She was drunk and stoned until she passed out. The children were taken away from her to foster care. Recovery from substance abuse is hard than those who are dually diagnosed because they believe that they are doing it for a reason.

Rosa, before she indulged in cocaine, alcohol, and marijuana, was a good parent to her kids and was thinking straight and well. After she started the substance abuse, she would pass out and try to run from the world of remembering how her husband used to beat her. The substances used to exacerbate her mental health.

To treat co-occurring clients who cannot stop using mental health prescriptions, they should look for real and sober friends to help them. People who don’t do substance abuse are more likely to influence others from doing the damage. They should also be advised to start doing physical exercise, such as running and playing football. This would lessen the time to do abuse and to clear their mind. They should also find some work to do to be able to satisfy their personal and family needs.
