Globalization is a cross-cultural integration between different countries related with the exchange of business, technology, education, employment, research and development, medical innovations, etc. (Gray, 2017), which result in the establishment of products and ideas of one country within the territory of other countries which leads to economic interdependence and empowerment. I agree with the statement that globalization is not a thing but a process because it is continuous and is still emerging. As we progress further with time, more exchange of the above entities will happen which will result in increased trade relationships between countries and they can leverage the strengths of the other countries through foreign investment and mergers. E.g. many e-commerce companies like Amazon are opening their warehouses in India leading to improved business and employment opportunities.
Also, looking at globalization as a process I think about my life and how social media has played a large role in my day to day and now also my friends, family and parents’ day to day. When I was younger, instant messenger and MySpace were the “newest” and “coolest” way of communicating with a large group of people outside of your direct community and was also the quickest way of spreading information to a larger audience. That then transitioned to Facebook and YouTube and now even Instagram was sharing ideas, traditions, thoughts, and events is a swipe, click and a post away from reaching millions of people. The one thing I have realized is that this form of globalization, while amazing and great at times for sharing information and keeping in touch with more people, it can be negative and dangerous. Situations that would happen across the country and across the globe were not something we saw daily and were not something that we felt were “in our backyard” (Bieber, 2014). Although this has helped with awareness and social impact, it has also provided more reasons for individuals to have opinions on things that don’t actually concern or impact their day to day.
I believe that globalization can serve us as individuals and as a community in a very positive way- however, it can also negatively impact us to the point that we are unable to differentiate the truth from reality.
