Negative effects of music in today’s generation

Music among students

It is a common practice to see students in college and youths in the streets wearing some headphones or earphones as they undertake their daily activities. In most cases, individuals listen to music to kill boredom or to be able to pass time in an environment where they do not have friends to talk to or whenever they do not want to interact with the people around them. Generally, music is considered one of the most important tools of communication and entertainment in the twenty-first century. Music has been used by both the youths and the old to pass time and to entertain themselves. But do we ever take time and think about the negative effects that music might have on individuals in modern society? Do we examine how the kind of music that different individuals listen to relate to their personality or how it influences their behavior? Good and bad music has been in existence for the longest time ever and the nature of music played determines its effect on the listener. Despite being a tool for entertainment, music is considered to have numerous negative effects on today’s generation.

First, music is considered to negatively affect the interaction of youths. This aspect is associated with the fact individuals normally control their moods using music (Dearn, 2013). Various psychologists have argued that music influenced an individual’s moods. In this case, individuals tend to use music to cool their moods whenever they feel low or when they feel sad. This aspect makes individuals rely on listening to music to solve their challenges instead of undertaking other measures that can be used to enhance mood management. This aspect makes the individuals spend most of their time listening to music reducing their levels of interaction and this aspect greatly affects a person’s interpersonal skills.

How music increases violence

Also, the listening of some forms of music is perceived to increase violence in today’s generation. It has been discovered that some form of music such as rap involves the use of violence which can influence individuals who listen to it negatively. According to Roberts, Christenson, &Gentile (2003), some form of music dictates the way of life of the artists which young people strongly embrace. In this case, some forms of music such as rap music are perceived to promote bad behaviors such as drug use and violence which may motivate the youths to practice such behaviors. This aspect makes the individuals who listen to and watch such kind of music to develop a violent behavior as they practice what they see in such songs.

Music is also associated with the degradation of moral standards among the youth (Georgieva, 2017). Fashion and design is an aspect which is greatly utilized in the development of modern music. This aspect has made different musicians take the fashion to a higher notch were different designs tend to promote immorality in their music. This aspect has influenced negatively the way the modern generations think and behave in society as they follow what their music idols do and practice. In this case, some forms of modern music are associated with the degradation of moral behaviors which are negatively affecting the modern generation.

In conclusion, music is perceived to have numerous negative effects on modern society. First, it has reduced human interactions making the individuals have poor interpersonal skills. Also, some forms of music such as rap are associated with violence and substance use which makes the modern generation practice those behaviors. Finally, modern music is associated with the degradation of ethical behavior and moral standards through the promotion of aspects such as immorality.
